I have long associated with the places I have called home - Vermont, Anguilla (in the British West Indies) and New Mexico. I have come to realize I have a bigger “sum” to my story. I grew up in Vermont and lived there for a few years post-college. My parents moved to Anguilla in the Caribbean when I was fourteen. What I gained from Anguilla is the serenity of the water, the charm of the old-world homes and the apparent simplicity of island life. Having now lived in Santa Fe over twenty years, my story is now my own, soaking in the landscape with hiking, skiing, biking, and enjoying the mountains, canyons, and wide-open spaces.
I am fascinated with the patterns in the landscape itself. From the rolling green hills of Vermont, to the peacefulness of the calm sea and sand to the wide-open space of New Mexico. I have been interested in an aerial perspective and a horizon viewpoint for several years now – the newest interpretation evolving with the newest medium of sewn cloth. This exhibition is a focus on the mountains, rivers, and fields we see around us here. My inspiration stems from Richard Diebenkorn, Yvonne Jacquette, Wayne Thiebaud and David Hockney and combining with my own palette and style.
Mixed media work on paper combines woodblocks, monotypes, drawing, collage and sewing. Originally stemming from re-cycling older work almost as sketches, these collaged works have become the work itself. My newest foray into sewing is working with fabrics that my wife, Maggie, has accumulated over the years. These fabric compositions are a new way to create landscape.
